Seychelles or Mauritius?
Mauritius is more than four times the size of Seychelles, more densely settled, and for the same money usually better equipped; Seychelles are emptier, greener and the stronger performance scenically. If you want a full programme on a limited budget, go to Mauritius — if you want quiet and granite, go to Seychelles.

When Mauritius is the better choice
Mauritius is the more sensible choice when budget matters. It has more hotels in every price band, an almost continuous reef and therefore calm lagoons for small children, plus golf courses, sugar estates, botanical gardens, and a kitchen where Indian, Creole, Chinese and French influences mix. If you want to stay three weeks without changing island, there is enough there. Getting there is cheaper too, because more airlines compete.
When Seychelles are the better choice
Seychelles are the choice when the landscape is the reason for the trip. Anse Source d'Argent, Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette have no equivalent on Mauritius: granite boulders growing out of the water are a feature of this archipelago and of no other. Then there is the difference in scale — an island of ten square kilometres with almost no cars produces a quiet that an island of over a million people cannot offer. Island hopping here is also a real part of the trip rather than a day excursion.

More for the money and more to do: Mauritius. Fewer people and the stronger beaches: Seychelles. On a tight budget, Mauritius is honestly the smarter trip.
