Seychelles or Bali?
Bali is a volcanic cultural island with temples, rice terraces and a food scene worth the trip on its own; Seychelles are a beach destination and not much else. If you want culture, surf and low prices, fly to Bali — if you are coming for the water, come to Seychelles.
| Seychelles | Bali | |
|---|---|---|
| Area | 459 km² | 5.780 km² |
| Highest point | 905 m | 3.031 m |
| Islands | 115 | 1 |
| Flight from central Europe | ≈ 10 h | ≈ 15–17 h |
Areas and elevations are geographic constants. Flight times are approximations from central Europe and depend on the routing.
When Bali is the better choice
Bali is the better trip when the budget is tight and the curiosity is not. For the price of a week in Seychelles you can stay three there, eat extremely well for a few euros, and have a programme of temples, volcanoes and rice terraces that has nothing to do with the beach. For surfers there is simply no equivalent in Seychelles. If you are staying long, working remotely, or want something to do in the evening, Bali is the far better fit.
When Seychelles are the better choice
For the beach itself the comparison is quickly settled. Bali's famous southern beaches are mostly dark volcanic sand with surf, often busy, and better suited to surfing than to swimming; the turquoise shallows most people picture are barely there. Then there is the journey: Seychelles are ten hours away without a change, Bali fifteen to seventeen with a stop. On a one-week holiday that eats a full travel day in each direction. And in southern Bali traffic is a serious matter — distances that look short on the map take an hour.
In short
Bali is the richer trip, Seychelles the better beach. With two weeks and an interest in more than water, Bali wins. With one week and a wish to do nothing, Seychelles do.
Before you book
Three islands in seven nights?
It is the most common mistake in Seychelles. Every island change costs half a day, and the transfer days land in the middle of the trip. One conversation beforehand prevents it.
