What we found
North Island is a 2.01 km² granitic island in the Seychelles' Inner Islands group, about 27 km northwest of Mahé and 5.8 km north of Silhouette Island. Following the island's purchase in 1997 for conservation and redevelopment, a private eco-resort opened in 2003 with 11 villas: ten 450 sqm Beachfront Villas with private plunge pools and the larger, 750 sqm Villa North, built using reclaimed Takamaka wood with rosewood and ylang-ylang elements, designed by architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens. The island is reached by a 15-minute helicopter transfer or about a one-hour boat trip from Mahé. Conservation work has included the reintroduction of Aldabra giant tortoises starting in 2003 (numbering around 170 by 2025), rat eradication in 2005, the relocation of Seychelles white-eye birds in 2007, and the planting of roughly 13,000 native trees across about 40 hectares of restored forest by 2008. In July 2025, the island returned to independent family ownership after several years as part of Marriott's Luxury Collection.
