What we found
Denis Private Island occupies a small private coral island about 60 km north of Mahé, at the northern edge of the Seychelles Bank near Bird Island. The island is named after French Navy officer Denis de Trobriand, who charted it in 1773, and a lighthouse built in 1910 still stands on its northern edge. The resort comprises 23 free-standing cottages and villas across four categories, ranging from 90 sqm Beach Cottages to a single 325 sqm Beach Villa. Access is by a grass airstrip on the island, Denis Island Airport, with a 775 m runway; there is no scheduled ferry service. On site, a PADI-affiliated dive centre operates alongside a conservation program run with the Green Islands Foundation, under which hawksbill and green turtles nest on the shoreline, and in 2004 a Nature Seychelles project relocated 47 Seychelles fodies and 58 Seychelles warblers to the island.
